Travel hacks for what seems to be the most perplexing issue for Japan tourists…

Yes, it’s true: Japan has no public trash bins. I can’t believe though how many people I’ve seen posting or commenting about it in the last couple of days; it’s almost like you’re all going to Japan for the first time!

So here are some easy — and I hope uselful — solutions for what seems to be a weird and burdensome problem for many.

1) Don’t be a disgusting person who eats on the street. Or the subway.

One of the reasons Japan has no rubbish bins is people don’t eat on the street. You won’t see it. It’s not considered proper etiquette unless you’re having a picnic or at a street fair or something, where there generally will be adequate trash receptacles. It is an especially big no-no to eat on the subway or any form of public transportation.

At the same time, bullet trains, trains to and from the airport, and any super-express passenger train will have trash and recycling facilities because it is considered acceptable to eat on these modes of transportation. In fact, it’s encouraged!
