Canceling Late Night Comedy Is One Of The Dumbest Business Moves Ever
It’s only going to hasten the crashing down of antiquated media empires
In an effort to ingratiate themselves with the current administration, or at least not get punished by it, major media companies are, I believe, putting their own slow burning financial suicide onto fast forward.
Nobody needs network TV anymore. Same goes for the streaming services that grew out of network TV.
The content is finally more valuable than the distribution. People watch Colbert because Colbert. People watch Kimmel because Kimmel. Not Paramount + or Disney +. And why is there a + there when it’s now really your core business, hardly an appendage? Just a lingering reminder of how hard the mass media powers that be tried to fight the internet in all forms, before accepting it as a grudgingly necessary add-on. The + is almost sort of an apology for something media “giants” didn’t understand, and by-and-large still don’t. And Hulu, which is such a dumb name it might as well be a +. (As badly managed as HBO may be, at least they got rid of +, although they may soon be acquired by a +.)
I bet a lot of people watching Colbert didn’t even know he was on CBS. And a lot of people watching Kimmel didn’t even know he was on ABC. No one…
